EPAS

DC Electronics have developed a complete range of standalone electric power-assisted steering systems (EPAS) for competition, road and marine use.


How it works

  • The EPAS system replaces the existing steering column.
  • An electric motor and torque sensor are fitted in-line with the steering column.
  • The torque sensor monitors the amount of force applied by the driver.
  • This signal is fed into the EPAS ECU where the motor delivers the appropriate amount of assistance to power the steering rack.

Professional Motorsport System

This system is designed for professional race teams. The user can fine tune the 5 adjustable steering maps (via a rotary position switch) to ensure the best feel and compatibility with the chassis. CAN bus connectivity ensures that all operating parameters can be exported to the vehicle’s data logger.

Autonomous

Our EPAS Ultra system can also be used for Autonomous applications. By using our custom firmware you can use the EPAS Ultra ECU and EPAS01 motor assembly (or other compatible OEM units) for multiple Autonomous scenarios. The system can be used for fully unmanned applications or applications where a driver may also be present at times. Control of steering rate and direction is via the CAN bus and switching from manned to unmanned modes can be carried out while the vehicle is in motion.

Where steering control of larger vehicles (such as trucks or buses) is required the EPAS01 can be used as a steering servo to manipulate the original vehicle hydraulic steering system.

For marine applications the EPAS Ultra can receive inputs from an autopilot system to take control of the rudder.

As an alternative to the motorsport system we also offer the EPAS Midi System comprising the following parts:

The Midi ECU uses a cost effective folded metal enclosure with a plastic interface connector. The system is ideal for applications where overheating of the ECU is unlikely to be an issue, such as lighter vehicles used for track days.

Pro Race System

The Pro Race steering system is designed to be an entry level electric power assisted steering system for competition/off highway use.


The system comprises the following parts:


  • Either EPAS100 Pro MGU or EPAS102 Pro Column
  • EPAS104 Pro Race ECU
  • EPAS106 Pro Race Wiring Harness

The MGU option is installed inline between the steering wheel and the steering rack (the internal torque sensor detects the amount of driver steering input and then engages the electric motor to assist). The Pro Column is a complete height adjustable steering column.


The Pro Race Wiring harness comes complete with a 6 position rotary control (off and 5 levels of assistance) fixed by factory set maps.

Pro Street System

The Pro Street system is designed for roadgoing vehicles, enabling cost-effective access to EPAS without needing to change the steering rack or fit a hydraulic system. The system comes in two styles, both of which function in the same way but offer a choice of packaging options:


EPAS100 Pro MGU

Shortened motor/gearbox to go in line with the existing steering column.

EPAS102 Pro Column

Complete height adjustable steering column.


Both systems are made using re-manufactured parts and come with a 2-year warranty when used for highway operation only.

MODE OF OPERATION


There are two options for controlling the EPAS motor:


Option 1

Manual control of steering assistance by potentiometer adjustment.


For this option you would add the following two items to your column or MGU:

A mode selection switch is provided with the harness to choose your preferred method of operation, which can be either: Manual control of steering assistance by potentiometer adjustment (as with Option 1) or a digital wheel speed input signal, which can be used to increase the level of assistance at parking speeds whilst firming up the steering at higher speed.

This universal system comes as a complete kit containing everything you need to add electric power steering to your vehicle.


DCE Microsteer’s unique Tuning Box allows the driver to manually adjust the level of steering assistance with the rotary potentiometer, as well as providing the option to switch to wheelspeed mode (making the system speed sensitive, with steering automatically becoming lighter at parking speeds, while reducing assistance at higher speeds).
