Autonomous EPAS Systems

Using our custom Autonomous firmware you can control any one of our EPAS Motor Gearbox Units (or other compatible OEM steering columns) for multiple Autonomous scenarios.

The various systems can be used for fully unmanned applications or applications where a driver may also be present at times.

Control of the steering rate and direction is via the CAN bus and switching from manned to unmanned modes can be carried out when the vehicle is in motion.

For marine applications the EPAS ECU can receive inputs from an autopilot system to take control of the rudder.

The standard Autonomous EPAS product range is listed below, however custom solutions are available upon request.

How it works

If the system is used for both manned and unmanned operation, the MGU is simply fitted between the steering wheel and the steering rack.

The ECU then actuates the motor depending upon the drivers input at the steering wheel, or by remote command depending upon the mode of operation.

For vehicles with no driver or steering wheel, the MGU is connected directly to the steering rack and reacts only to the remote demand via the CAN bus.

  • Ideal for mid size, 12V DC vehicles with no existing PAS system.
  • MGU is fitted anywhere inline between the steering wheel and rack input pinion.
  • Input shaft allows manual control as well as autonomous control.
  • System can provide up to 81 ft.lbs / 110Nm of steering column torque.
  • CAN Bus control using one of the three following options:
    • Sending a simulated torque sensor signal.
    • Sending a +/- duty cycle demand for direct control of the EPAS motor.
    • Sending heading and gain request for the EPAS motor to steer to.

Pro MGU with Autonomous Control

A versatile solution for both manned and unmanned operations, where the power of the motorsport system isn’t required.


  • Ideal for small, 12V DC vehicles with no existing PAS system.
  • MGU is fitted anywhere inline between the steering wheel and rack input pinion.
  • Input shaft allows manual control as well as autonomous control.
  • System can provide up to 66 ft.lbs / 90Nm of steering column torque.
  • CAN Bus control using one of the three following options:
    • Sending a simulated torque sensor signal.
    • Sending a +/- duty cycle demand for direct control of the EPAS motor.
    • Sending heading and gain request for the EPAS motor to steer to.

Fully Autonomous System

This system has no steering wheel connection and is for direct rack connection only.


  • Ideal for use on 12V DC vehicles that are solely required to be steered autonomously.
  • MGU is mounted directly to the input pinion of the hydraulic or manual rack.
  • Simplified MGU (motor gearbox unit) with no input shaft and sensors.
  • System can provide up to 66 ft.lbs / 90Nm of steering column torque.
  • CAN Bus control using one of the three following options:
    • Sending a simulated torque sensor signal.
    • Sending a +/- duty cycle demand for direct control of the EPAS motor.
    • Sending heading and gain request for the EPAS motor to steer to.

Microsteer MGU with Autonomous Control

Our most compact system, for applications that do not require as much power as the Motorsport or Pro MGU options. Ideal for use as a steering servo when mated to a hydraulic power steering system.


  • Used on vehicles that still utilize hydraulic power steering and require autonomous & manned control
  • Ideal for 12V DC, very low steering input load vehicles
  • MGU is fitted anywhere inline between the steering wheel and rack input pinion.
  • Input shaft allows manual control as well as autonomous control
  • System can provide up to 24 ft.lbs / 32Nm of steering column torque
  • CAN Bus control using one of the three following options:
    • Sending a simulated torque sensor signal.
    • Sending a +/- duty cycle demand for direct control of the EPAS motor.
    • Sending heading and gain request for the EPAS motor to steer to.

Pneumatic Brake Actuator

Specifically designed for 24VDC (12VDC upon request) vehicles with pneumatic braking systems.

This is a dual channel, fully redundant brake control unit designed for use on autonomous vehicles fitted with an air brake system. The BCU can be used in conjunction with the existing brake system or as a standalone unit.
